When load shedding first started, many years ago, we never imagined that it would become part of our daily life. It has become normal to expect load shedding, follow updates and plan our lives around it. In the darkest hour, there is always a light on the path.
While load shedding is terrible for business and society, we should recognise the good business that comes out of it.
1. Eating out
Pre COVID-19 restaurants could benefit from more people coming out to eat. It was a lot more comfortable than staying at home, without electricity.
2. Generators
Thanks to load shedding, there is a booming industry of hiring and selling generators.
3. Light up
Load shedding increased demand for for candles, lanterns, batteries and other consumables
4. Off the grid
Load shedding together with the exorbitant electricity hikes have motivated more people to get off the grid, fully or partially. Today solar panels and inverters have moved from the fringes, reserved for the elite, towards mainstream, where middle income homes are investing in it.
Load shedding creates opportunities for entrepreneurs to source, manufacture, distribute, hire, service, repair and provide more of the alternative products and solutions to a growing market.
