What is the difference between Cost and Expense?

Cost versus Expense

Cost is R value of economic resource to undertake an activity (e.g manufacture product or render service)

Expense is the cost that has been used / benefit has flowed to the business

Example

Purchased material for R 1000, used R 800 in business. 

Cost: R 1000

Expense: R 800
